Who made the greatest impact?

impactThere was a debate among scholars on which human being made the maximum positive impact on humanity ever? People started first with political leaders, who guided their nation to great heights in period of greatest turbulence – Abraham Lincoln, Winston Churchill, Roosevelt, Napoleon, Gandhi, Mao etc. Then people listed scientists who made a great impact on humanity– Newton, Einstein, Darwin, Fleming. Then came sports people – who pushed the limits like Roger Bannister, Pele, Bob Beamon, Babe Ruth, Tendulkar.

Each of these people made a huge impact. However, the scholars were debating on the criteria to judge the person who made the greatest impact. Finally they agreed, the person who made the maximum impact (I) = person whose ideas have the longest relevance in number Years (Y) multiplied by the maximum number of People (P) who follow or benefit from their ideas. Mathematically put, Impact (I) = Relevant Years (Y) X People benefited (P).

Do you know who the scholars decided as the person who made the maximum impact in history? It was Gautama Buddha – whose ideas are relevant for over 2600 years to over 1200 million people across the globe. This was followed by other people like Christ, Prophet Mohammed, Aristotle, Socrates, Confucius etc. The scholars found a few things common to the people who made the lasting impact on millions. They were NOT the most Powerful, nor the Richest, nor the Smartest people during their times. But their ideas benefited millions and stood the test of time.

It’s a great reminder, when our egos make us very proud of ourselves, our material possessions, size of organisations, fancy titles to stop and ponder, whether our work is really making a positive impact benefiting others?

happy reflecting!

    1. Last 100 years – Mahatma Gandhi & Deng Xiapong. Gandhi for all the reasons we made him father of our nation and for galvanizing 500 million Indians to fight the British colonial power with a non-violent & moral force, eventually leading to independence. Deng Xiapong, who was practical enough to see – it does not matter if you follow communism or capitalism, as long as people come out of poverty. His famous quotes: “It doesn’t matter if a cat is black or white, so long as it catches mice.” & “Poverty is not socialism. To be rich is glorious.” His reforms started in 1978 made China an economic/ manufacturing/ saving superpower and single handedly made 400 million chinese people come out of absolute povert within 15 years. Both these leaders made a big impact on many people (I) and their legacy will live for many many years after thier death.

  5. lol a couple of the reviews bloggers write are just silly and unrelated, sometimes i wonder whether they at all read the post before writing or whether they merely look at the subject of the post and write the very first thought that comes to their minds. But it is nice to find a fresh commentary every now and then in contrast to the exact same, traditional blog garbage which I oftentimes notice on the blogs. Cheers

I hope i don’t have spyware or something. Does anyone know what the problem could be?
