Dealing with teenagers in today’s world is one of the most challenging tasks of bringing up children. Nearly all of them go through behavioral changes , become adamant , have incessant demands and are defiant – making it difficult for parents to understand them and converse with them.
Inculcating good values in them is the only way to make sure that they grow up to be responsible individuals. There is a very thin line between too little discipline or a heavy handed approach to make them understand. Each child is unique and needs to be tackled in a different way.
Teenagers need a supportive environment and parents should play an active role in providing it to them. Children should be praised and applauded for for good jobs done so as to keep them motivated. Allow teenagers to make their own decisions and if they make mistakes , let them learn from those mistakes.
As parents we need to offer emotional support to them. Being behind them 100 % and letting them know that parents care for them means a lot to them. Parents have to stay calm and hear them out.
Every teenager goes through a patch of behavior changes – but all this passes. With the support from the family they come out of such a phase more confident and receptive to new ideas. In this process the parents also learn to be more tolerant and patient . It is a two way learning process as teenagers and parents learn to respect each other more .
Let us be friendly and understanding parents to our children to bring out the best in them .
Cheers !!
