competency…..

There is no substitute for the ability to perform. Knowing what to do – professional competence – is vital to leadership. While that alone can’t make a leader, it can surely undo one.

Amongst many other reasons that create followership, competency is right up there. People would love to follow someone they believe is competent. The expectation is not that the leader be a foremost expert on every area of the entire organization. Just that they need to be able to demonstrate competency.

The mere position of leadership makes some to accept but most require greater convincing before declaring you competent. When people under your leadership look at some action you have taken and think “that just goes to show why he is the one in charge”, you are demonstrating competency. If these moments are infrequent, leadership influence needs to be boosted through more visible examples such that people notice.

The old saying that the rising tide lifts all ships is true in business too. When the economy is in shape, customer interest is high, organisation is on a fast growth track – it is easy to look good with little regard to ability. Real competence manifests in hard times – willingness to make difficult and tough choices, confidence to stay with the vision, ignoring the path of least resistance to do what you believe is best for everyone. It is also the ability to admit mistakes and grow from those, publicly and openly.

Often we tend to continue to do tasks, jobs we are most comfortable at doing or those that have made us successful in the past. If you seek growth and learnings, that is the competency trap to be avoided. It is not the incompetent that destroy the organisation. It is those who have achieved something and want to rest upon their achievements who are forever clogging things up. So – Go and Get Challenged!!

A great attitude coupled with a strong learning agility can be your most effective armour to add to your skills. And the good thing as we have discussed earlier – those are matters of personal choice. That is the mantra to become more competent. Thus our determination will be the differentiator in our quest to become a better professional and person!
